Here’s another definition: It feels as if it’s willed into existence, both in the final story on screen and in the behind-the-scenes journey that explains how an auteur’s story got there. Indie filmmaking is notoriously hard to define combine the constantly shifting number known as “low budget” and another shifty goalpost, “independent,” and we’re partly there. But if the moviemaking miracles produced by Hollywood’s studio system are predestined - recycled IP inevitabilities that cost as much money as there are stars in the sky - indies are something greater. Films are stunning artifacts of humanity’s singular ability to dream and wonder in unison. ![]()

The disappearance of the subtitle notwithstanding, the film directed by Michael Showalter is similarly upfront about the ending, undercutting any thought to providing manufactured suspense. The real Michael Ausiello’s 2017 memoir detailing his 13-year relationship and marriage began with the statement, “This isn’t the way it was supposed to end,” and cheekily carries with it the subtitle, The Hero Dies. I read it on a flight to and from Ohio in March of last year, and it was a hard one to shake. Let’s start with the most recent horror novel on my list, Paul Tremblay’s A Head Full of Ghosts. So, I am putting together a short wish list of my favorite horror novels that I think would make great films.
